Can Mastitis be Prevented by Optimum Management and Nutrition?

[Dublin, IRELAND] - Alltech and The School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD), are pleased to announce that they will join forces once again to host a two-day International Dairy Solutions Symposium at UCD. This year's event will focus on 'Mastitis Knowledge and Practice', where leading researchers from Europe, US and Australia will present on the topic from the 27 - 28 September.

Despite advances in mastitis, incidence rates remain at an unacceptably high level in many dairy herds. A significant body of knowledge already exists and if appropriately implemented should allow us to prevent and optimally manage mastitis at herd level. The purpose of this year's Dairy Solutions Symposium is to examine contemporary epidemiological trends in mastitis and casual pathogens, discuss the economic impact of mastitis on farm profitability, determine best practice for the monitoring and prevention of mastitis on farm and at national herd level and to investigate the link between nutrition and immunity in the occurrence of mastitis.

Professor Michael Doherty of veterinary clinical studies from the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, UCD, explained, "Mastitis represents both an animal welfare concern and a major cause of economic loss to the dairy industry. Our collaboration with Alltech, a global leader in animal nutrition will advance practical solutions in the area of mastitis".

Ms. Sylvie Andrieu, Alltech's European ruminant manager, further reiterated, "This is an excellent opportunity for industry and a major centre of research to come together and work in collaboration on an area that is of increasing concern for the dairy industry."
